The Foundation operates the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation Nature Center, with programs and guided walks about the importance of the lagoon as a habitat for birds, insects, plants, fish, mammals and benthic organisms. The nature center is open daily.〔(Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation )〕 There is a rumor that there is buried treasure in the center of the lagoon's island. Locals say that the island was a place where pirates would trade in the 1500s. Although it is not proven true, many people have been seen bringing shovels with them as they swim or paddle to the island.
